Reversibility of Veneers
Porcelain veneers are made of a ceramic material that is molded and shaped to fit over your existing teeth. In most cases, cosmetic dentistry patients are extremely pleased with the results of having porcelain veneers placed.
Occasionally, there may be a need or desire to have veneers removed. This often poses a problem if they are typical porcelain veneers.
Veneers Can Be Removed, but . . .
Porcelain veneers are a fantastic way to change and enhance your smile without the use of traditional orthodontics. It is important to understand that the process of placing porcelain veneers is not reversible.
This is because in order for veneers to be properly placed, a small amount of enamel must be removed from the front of the tooth for fitting, and for the bonding material to adhere correctly to the front of the tooth. Keep in mind, though, that the amount of enamel removed to place a veneer is very minute compared to that which is removed for other dental restorations to take place.
If your veneers are removed, however, your teeth will bear the visible marks of the placement process. If you are unsatisfied with your veneers, the best solution is to have them replaced with better veneers that are more in line with what you had in mind.
Get It Right the First Time
If you are going to get porcelain veneers, it is crucial that you get the procedure right the first time. There are a number of things you can do to give yourself the best chance of getting the smile you want the first time around.
Choosing a good cosmetic dentist is your first, best step in ensuring you get the smile you want. Choose a dentist with a good reputation, such as one trusted by beauty pageant contestants and others who depend on the quality of their smile. Look at before and after pictures and read testimonials.
Discuss smile design with your dentist. What you dislike about your smile is a good starting place for a conversation, but it is just as important to talk about what you hope your smile looks like after restoration.
Trust your dentist. If you've picked a good cosmetic dentist, you should trust his or her judgment to determine the final choices in deciding on your smile. He or she will have years of experience in what makes smiles work and will have a good idea about what is likely to get the results you want for your smile.
