Dental implants are the most effective and comprehensive solution available for missing teeth. While bridges and dentures remain viable options for patients who aren’t good implant candidates, we overwhelmingly recommend implants for their appearance, durability, and structural and functional advantages. What are dental implants?
Unlike bridges and dentures, which merely fill the empty space left by a missing tooth, dental implants are true replacements. Missing teeth create the potential for such complications as
●Drifting of adjacent teeth
●Degradation of underlying bone
●Increased risk of gum infection
Dental implants address all of these issues by physically filling in for the missing tooth. First, a special titanium screw is surgically implanted into the jawbone. This is the implant itself, and with time, it actually fuses with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration. It becomes, in essence, a new root.
Once the implant has been fully assimilated and the site of insertion allowed to heal, a prosthetic porcelain crown is attached, which replaces the tooth itself. Together, the implant and the crown act as a fully functioning tooth that looks and acts just like the real thing.
One of the most compelling reasons to opt for implants is the enormous convenience they afford when compared to other tooth replacement options. Unlike dentures, there is no need for extended soaking periods, and you can eat the foods you enjoy. All that is needed is to follow your normal brushing and flossing protocols, along with regular checkups, and you can expect your implants to last for decades, or even a lifetime.
Most patients who wish to receive dental implants are able to do so, but there are a few conditions that may exclude your candidacy. If you answer yes to any of the following, then implants may be right for you.
●Are you a nonsmoker?
●Are you in generally good health?
●Are you willing and able to endure the approximately 5 to 8 months necessary to complete the full procedure?
●Will you be able to follow your dentist’s brushing and flossing instructions after receiving implants?
Patients without sufficient bone structure to receive the implants may be disqualified from receiving dental implants. Dr. Huefner will assess this during your dental implant consultation.
