Unlike other tooth replacement options such as bridges and dentures, dental implants are a permanent, full-replacement option for missing teeth.

While bridges and dentures are an excellent option for many patients, they only replace the visible, upper portion of the tooth. In some cases, this can lead to a condition known as osseointegration, in which the jaw begins to weaken and degrade as a result of the missing tooth root.

Dental implants are designed to replace the whole tooth, including the root, with a permanent replacement tooth that looks and functions just like a natural tooth, and which prevents bone loss.

A dental implant consists of two parts—the implant, and the crown.

The implant is a sort of anchor surgically implanted in the jaw. The crown, described in detail in our porcelain crowns page, is a natural looking, functional replacement tooth that is permanently affixed to the implant.
