Orange County Teeth Crown and Bridges FAQs
Serving Orange County In Irvine, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Laguna Niguel, Santa Margarita, and Surrounding Areas
I was in an accident and have extensive damage to my teeth. What can be done?
One of the best ways to fix severely damaged teeth is with crowns. These are ideal if some of the original tooth above the gum is still present, provided you also have healthy roots. Keep in mind that if you need a root canal, crowns can be used afterwards to replace the tooth. A crown covers the entire surface of the tooth or teeth and looks and feels like your own teeth.
What if I’ve also lost some of my teeth?
For missing teeth, we do what’s called a bridge. In essence, a bridge is a false tooth that is permanently bonded in place of your missing tooth or teeth. It’s imperative that your missing teeth are replaced with a bridge as soon as possible because missing teeth pose a host of other problems such as periodontal disease. We also want to make sure the rest of your teeth stay in place. When a tooth is missing, other teeth tend to drift into the open area. A bridge can prevent both periodontal disease and tooth drift.
Is the procedure painful?
Not necessarily. Even if you need extensive restorative dental work, we offer a variety of sedation options so that you don’t feel pain or anxiety. We know that some people are anxious about visiting the dentist, so when the need becomes imperatives, such as with missing or severely damaged teeth, Dr. Huefner and Sensational Smiles go the extra mile to make sure that every visit to our office is as comfortable as possible. We know the importance of your smile, not only for your health, but for your appearance and confidence. That’s why we start with a relaxing office atmosphere, and if necessary, will prescribe a sedative before you even come to the office.
How do I take care of my dental crowns and bridges?
Good oral hygiene is recommended for everyone, and that’s true for people with crowns and bridge’s also. Brushing regularly and flossing along with regular dental checkups is the first place to start. In addition, there is a special type of floss to use for your bridge. Dr. Huefner will explain in greater detail the proper care of your crowns and bridges. Initially, you may need to eat softer food, cut into smaller pieces, until you get used to your new crowns and bridges. Of course, a balanced, nutritious diet is good for both dental and overall health.
