Periodontics, or gum care, is an essential element of your overall dental health. No matter how perfect your teeth are, you need strong, healthy gums to avoid tooth loss.
Gum disease is a common condition, and can be very serious if left untreated. However, if caught early, it can be effectively treated and even reversed with a simple in-office procedure.
At Sensational Smiles, we are serious about your dental health, so we're serious about periodontal maintenance. We include a thorough gum checkup with every dental examination, and we emphasize early detection and treatment of gum disease.
Depending on the severity of gum disease, treatment may consist of one or more of the following procedures:
Scale and root plane
A scale and root plane is a simple, in-office procedure in which accumulated plaque and tartar is removed from under the gums, then the surface of the tooth root is smoothed to prevent accumulation and subsequent gum disease in the future, this process is called planing.
Most cases of early-stage gum disease can be very effectively treated using this simple method—not just preventing further damage, but repairing existing damage.
Gum surgery
In more advanced cases of gum disease, in which the plaque and tartar accumulation penetrates deep into the gums, you may require a surgical procedure to remove the accumulation and prevent further progress of the disease.
In cases such as this, the extent and the efficacy of the procedure will depend on the extent of the problem.
At Sensational Smiles, we offer the latest in laser gum treatment for periodontal disease, making gum surgery less invasive, less painful, and more effective.
If you do require a surgical procedure to halt your gum disease, Dr. Huefner and his staff will thoroughly explain your options and discuss your condition and treatment with you.
Bone grafting
In the most severe cases, advanced gum disease can cause bone loss to your jaw, which can result in serious problems including tooth loss.
If your gum disease has advanced to the point that you have lost bone material, it is possible to correct the damage with bone grafts, using either synthetic or natural material.
